ToggleBarista FIRE is a shortcut to an early retirement lifestyle—and a powerful alternative to traditional FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early). It’s still a relatively new retirement planning option, even though it’s gaining traction quickly among those in the FIRE community—and more Barista FIRE Calculators are appearing to help people map out their journey.
With Barista FIRE, you work, save, and invest more now so you can afford to work less sooner rather than later in life. Instead of waiting until your investment portfolio covers all your expenses, you semi retire earlier by covering part of your living costs with passive income—and the rest with part-time work on your own terms.

Unlike traditional FIRE, where the goal is to fully retire early and never work again, Barista FIRE is a form of partial financial independence and a flexible semi-retirement strategy.
Your portfolio isn’t yet large enough to let you stop working entirely—but it gives you enough freedom to walk away from full-time work. You still generate a side income, but ideally by doing work that you enjoy and that fits your lifestyle. Our Barista FIRE Calculator shows you how soon you could reach that milestone.
In that sense, Barista FIRE is about designing a flexible, low-stress lifestyle. That’s why some refer to it as Barista FI rather than Barista FIRE—because you’re not aiming for full early retirement and financial independence yet, but you’re living out many of its benefits along the way—even before achieving full FIRE.
The main goal of Barista FIRE is simple: Live a life where work supports your lifestyle—not the other way around.

Healthcare coverage. No matter where you live, healthcare costs can be a major challenge in semi retirement. If you need to pay out of pocket, the costs can quickly explode—particularly for families with multiple kids seeking full coverage. With standard state insurance or basic private plans, healthcare costs can easily exceed 1,000 per month for those families—even in Germany. That’s why getting healthcare through part-time work during your partial retirement years is so beneficial:
Running your numbers in the FREE Barista FIRE Calculator can reveal how healthcare costs might impact your semi retirement timeline—sometimes more than expected.

The term Barista comes from the US company Starbucks, which offers health insurance to their part-time employees —hence the name Barista FI. But why specifically Starbucks?
Typically, healthcare is not offered to part-time employees in the US. Starbucks was one of the first companies to do that. Today, more US companies offer healthcare coverage to their part-time employees—but it’s still the exception, not the rule.
As I’m not from the US, I recommend this YouTube video: The Best Places To Work For Barista FIRE (in the US). Pay close attention to the table at 6:46. One key takeaway for me was that part-time work often starts at 20 hours per week.
In Germany (and much of Europe), things work differently. Most larger companies allow part-time work without reducing healthcare benefits. That’s part of the work culture in Western and Northern Europe, where many employees—especially parents—take advantage of this system. I personally know moms who work just 8–15 hours a week (!) and still receive full health insurance. I’ve done that myself for a couple of months. I know—that sounds wild by US standards.
You need to keep in mind that starting to withdraw money from any portfolio slows its long-term growth. Your FREE Barista FIRE Calculator makes this crystal clear—it compares what happens when you begin withdrawing early to what it looks like if you delay and follow the traditional FIRE path instead.
Slowing your portfolio’s long-term growth happens because you’re consistently withdrawing money from it. The biggest potential risk lies in how your portfolio performs during your first semi retirement years—a concept known as sequence of return risk. We’ll dive deeper into that in the next paragraph.
What many don’t realize is that Barista FIRE might become a forever strategy. Your portfolio may never grow large enough to reach your full FIRE number—or worse, you could outlive your retirement savings during partial retirement. Technically, that means you might never achieve full financial independence and may need to work indefinitely.
On the flip side, your investments might continue to grow over time—even as you withdraw from them, which you’ll also see clearly in your FREE Barista FIRE Calculator. In that case, Barista FIRE truly lives up to its name by bridging the gap to full financial independence.
Statistically, when looking at stock market history, it is much more likely that your portfolio will continue to grow over time—even as you withdraw—as long as you follow a reliable Safe Withdrawal Rate. More on that below. The point is: it depends on many personal and market factors.
But what exactly is your FIRE number? It’s the amount of money you need in your portfolio so that the passive income it generates can consistently cover your living expenses—ideally for life, without the fear of running out. That number depends largely on how much you withdraw from your portfolio each year. More on that in the next paragraph.
Your FREE Barista FIRE Calculator shows you exactly what that FIRE number looks like for your personal situation.

First, what exactly is sequence of return risk? In short, it means that the timing of your portfolio’s returns matters more than the average return itself—especially during your first 10 years of retirement withdrawals.
If the market performs poorly during these early years and you still need to withdraw money, you could deplete a significant portion of your portfolio too soon.
You can reduce sequence of return risk by doing the following:
When I started to consider semi retirement and using our Barista FIRE Calculator one of my first questions was: how can I choose the right withdrawal rate? This percentage determines how much money you can safely take out from your investment portfolio each year during semi retirement without running out of money.
Michael Kitces’s research on sequence of return risk is well-known—not just in the FIRE community. He suggests two things to reduce sequence of return risk.
First, use a 4% withdrawal rate for diversified portfolios and retirement periods of up to 30 years. For retirement horizons of 40+ years, Kitces recommends starting with an initial 3.5% withdrawal rate.
Second, give your family flexibility by working a couple of hours per week on something you enjoy while earning a decent amount of money like 10,000 per year. That means you don‘t need to withdraw another 833 per month and need 262,000 less in your portfolio.
Our FREE Barista FIRE Calculator lets you explore how different withdrawal rates affect your semi retirement timeline and Barista FIRE number, helping you find a strategy that fits your goals and comfort level.
Let’s look at an example:
If your expected annual spending in retirement is €30.000 and you plan to use a 4% Safe Withdrawal Rate, you would multiply €30.000 by 25 to get your FIRE number—that’s €750.000. Withdrawing 4% annually allows you to take out €30.000 per year for up to 30 years with a high probability of not running out of money.
If you want to be more conservative and use a 3.5% withdrawal rate, you multiply your annual expenses by ~29. In this case, you’d need a portfolio of around €870.000 to safely withdraw €30.000 per year.
I’d like to encourage you to simply run your numbers in our Barista FIRE Calculator—it’s free and you can do it directly online to see how this semi retirement strategy could look for you.
