Barista FIRE is a flexible semi retirement strategy: you design a lifestyle you don’t need to escape from—where part-time work and smart investing give you freedom of time, sooner. Instead of waiting 10–15+ years to retire early and stop working, as with traditional FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early), the Barista FIRE approach helps you start living more now.
In this post, you’ll learn 7 simple steps to help make Barista FIRE a reality for your family—faster than you might think.

ToggleIf you’ve never actively engaged with your personal finances, I would recommend tracking your expenses so you know how much money you actually need each month. We’ve been doing this for over 10 years using the budgeting app YNAB. To explore alternatives check out The Best Budget Apps for 2025.
Once you know what you spend, ask yourself how your expenses might change over time. Which costs are likely to go down and which might increase? From my experience as a mum, kids often get more expensive as they grow—but it depends.
I’ve written several blog posts specifically for beginners or anyone feeling stuck with budgeting:

Before my husband and I created the downloadable template, we built the Bare Bones Calculator just for our own needs. It’s a more advanced tool than the free version—and it helped our family navigate the last two years with reduced income (due to my parental leave) and rising expenses (because of inflation) without breaking our budget or touching our savings.
The easy-to-use calculator lets you plan 3 years of personal finances in a connected view, including income, expenses, and liquidity—so you can move forward with clarity and control.

If you’re currently earning a full-time income, or something close, the next step is to estimate how much you could earn with a more flexible part-time setup like a side hustle. This is the second half of the equation in Barista FIRE planning.
Let’s say you earn €10,000 a year from a side hustle you enjoy. That’s €833 per month you don’t need to withdraw from your investments. This income replaces around €250.000 in portfolio value—based on the 4% rule. That means you take out 4% from your portfolio per year which equals almost €10,000 or €833 per month. That’s a massive shortcut on your path to semi-retirement.
Here’s the math:
€833 × 12 months = €9.996 per year
€9.996 × 25 (based on 4% rule) = €249.900
Don’t forget to consider seasonal work, too. For example, my husband Marc loves doing our tax declaration—I don’t know anyone else who does! That’s his superpower. And because it’s seasonal, he only works intensely for a few days per year. The rest of the time? Completely free. That’s the beauty of seasonal work. And in this case, he earns thousands without even working for someone else. It’s flexible income that fits perfectly with the Barista FIRE lifestyle.

Let’s say you expect to spend 50,000 per year and earn 30,000 from part-time work as a couple. That leaves a gap of 20.000 per year—your passive income goal: a key part of your Barista FIRE plan.
50,000 expenses – 30,000 earnings = 20,000 you’ll need to withdraw from your portfolio per year
This is the amount your investments must cover annually without you working for it—like through a stock market portfolio. So how large does your portfolio need to be to cover that 20,000? That’s what we’ll determine in “Step 6: Find Your Barista FIRE Number”.
Starting your Barista FIRE journey means shifting your focus toward saving more. While traditional FIRE often aims for a 50% savings rate, you don’t necessarily need to go that high. Sicne you’ll still work part-time with Barista FIRE, your retirement savings target is much lower—making this path easier.

But saving money has its limits—and the real challenge often isn’t financial, but emotional or behavioral. I’ve shared a few blog posts that show how to save more without feeling deprived just by reducing waste:
You’ll also find some fun money-saving challenges to help you grow your savings rate faster:
A key part of your Barista FIRE journey is investing money wisely. One of the most trusted strategies in the FIRE community is investing in low-cost, broadly diversified stock index funds through a monthly savings plan.

You’ll keep saving and investing your money until your portfolio reaches your Barista FIRE number, which marks the point where part-time work and passive income can fully support your lifestyle.

Your Barista FIRE number is the portfolio milestone that tells you: your investments can generate enough passive income to cover a significant portion of your living expenses. The rest is handled by part-time work. But there’s no fixed rule—how much your portfolio should cover depends entirely on your lifestyle goals and retirement timeline.
To calculate your Barista FIRE number, you’ll need to choose your withdrawal rate. This rate tells you how much money you can reliably withdraw from your investments each year without running out of money during semi-retirement. Also, it depends on how long your total retirement period is.
I show you how that works in the blog post Free Barista FIRE Calculator to Reach Semi-Retirement Sooner. Once you’ve chosen your withdrawal rate, plug your numbers into the free Barista FIRE Calculator and see how close you might already be. But first, let’s head to the final step.
Once you hit your Barista FIRE number, you stop saving and stop investing in your portfolio—your savings rate can drop to 0%.
This is usually when you leave your full-time or high-stress job and switch to a part-time role that feels lighter and more enjoyable. Your part-time income now complements your passive income—and can even help cover essentials like family healthcare.
At this point, you’re officially Barista FIREd—and you can begin withdrawing from your investment portfolio to support your new, flexible lifestyle.

With Barista FIRE you benefit from tax savings and tax advantages that can help stretch your money even further. In many European countries, including Germany, passive income from stock investments—like dividends—is taxed at a lower rate than full-time job income.
And since Barista FIRE includes working a part-time job instead of staying in a high-income and high-stress job, your overall earnings are usually taxed less too.
That means you keep more of what you earn—both from part-time work and from your investment portfolio.
Barista FIRE is especially appealing if you:
