Real Numbers. Real Journey.

Every number you see here is real. No simulations, no “example data” — just our actual net worth, tracked over time, including a forward-looking projection.
We built this tool for ourselves first — and now we’re sharing it with other parents who want to achieve financial independence but feel overwhelmed by their finances.

This free financial ledger lets you record your income, expenses, assets, debts, and portfolio value for every year — and turns the raw numbers into a clear picture of how your net worth is growing over time.

No spreadsheet setup. No formulas to maintain. Just add your years, fill in the numbers, and watch your financial story come together.

What the Financial Ledger Tracks

Each row in the ledger represents one year. For every year you can record:

  • Income and expenses — the ledger calculates your savings rate automatically
  • Assets and debts — so you always know your true net worth
  • Portfolio value and investments added — tracks your investment growth separately from real estate or other assets
  • Notes — attach a short comment to any year (a job change, a big purchase, a milestone)

The ledger also generates a forecast section for future years, so you can plan ahead alongside your historical record.

How to Use the Financial Ledger

Financial ledger showing 2025 income, expenses, savings rate, portfolio value, debts, and net worth — with a 2026 forecast row below.
  1. Click Add Previous Year or Add Next Year to build your timeline
  2. Enter your numbers for each year — leave any field blank if you don’t have the data
  3. Hover the pencil icon on any row to preview your note, or click it to write one
  4. Use the S&P 500 toggle to benchmark your portfolio against the index
  5. Switch between chart views — savings rate, portfolio growth, debt paydown, or net worth — to spot trends

Your data is saved automatically in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why a Financial Ledger Beats a Snapshot

Financial ledger savings rate chart from 2016 to 2030, showing rates mostly between 40–65%, with a sharp drop to near 0% in 2018 and a dip to around 30% in 2024

Most people check their net worth once and move on. A financial ledger shows you the trajectory — how fast you’re building wealth, whether your savings rate is improving, and how much debt you’ve paid down over the years.

Seeing ten years of data in one place makes patterns visible that a single snapshot never could. A bad year looks different when you can see the recovery that followed it. A strong savings rate in your thirties tells a different story than the same rate in your fifties.

The ledger turns your finances into a timeline — and timelines are far more motivating than numbers in isolation.

FAQs: Financial Ledger Frequently Asked Questions

What is a financial ledger?

A financial ledger is a year-by-year record of your key financial figures — income, expenses, assets, debts, and investments. Unlike a budget app that focuses on the current month, a financial ledger gives you a long-term view of how your wealth is changing over time.

How is net worth calculated?

Net worth is your total assets minus your total debts. In this ledger, you enter both figures directly for each year, and the net worth is calculated and displayed automatically.

What is savings rate and why does it matter?

Your savings rate is the percentage of your income that you don't spend. It is calculated as (income − expenses) / income × 100. A high savings rate is the single biggest driver of early financial independence — more than investment returns or income alone.

What's the difference between assets and portfolio value?

Assets include everything you own — your home, cash, pension, investments, and any other property. Portfolio value is just the investable portion: stocks, ETFs, and similar assets. Tracking both separately lets you see how much of your net worth is liquid versus tied up in property or other illiquid assets.

Does the ledger support European number formats?

Yes. You can enter numbers with either a dot or a comma as the thousands separator (e.g. 1.234 or 1,234). Both formats are parsed correctly.

Is my data stored securely?

All data stays in your browser's local storage. Nothing is transmitted to any server. Clearing your browser data will erase your ledger, so use the export option if you want a backup.

Can I use this alongside a FIRE calculator?

Yes — the financial ledger pairs well with a FIRE or Coast FIRE calculator. Use the ledger to track your actual historical numbers, and use a FIRE calculator to model when you can stop working.
