What Is Barista FIRE / Barista FI?

Barista FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) — also called Barista FI — is a variation of the FIRE movement focused on partial financial independence. Your investments cover part of your living expenses, while part-time or flexible work fills the gap, allowing your portfolio to continue growing toward full financial independence. This approach gives you more time freedom and balance long before traditional retirement.

How the Barista FIRE Calculator Works

  1. Enter Your Current Data — current age, income, expenses, portfolio balance
  2. Plan Your Barista FIRE Goal — desired Barista FIRE age, when you switch to part-time work (covering part of your expenses through your portfolio) and the income you expect to have during Barista FIRE
  3. Define Your Full Retirement Phase — set your expected retirement expenses and the age when you plan to fully retire (your portfolio should eventually cover all living expenses)
  4. Review Key Assumptions — enter the expected average return on your investments (see FAQs below) and your safe withdrawal rate of choice, as mentioned above

Your Barista FIRE Number (How It's Calculated)

Your Barista FIRE Number is the invested capital required so that combining portfolio withdrawals with part-time income funds your living expenses.

Formula:

Barista FIRE Number = ( ( Monthly FIRE Expenses Monthly Barista Income ) × 12 SWR )

Example:

If you plan 30,000 annual spending, earn 12,000 annually from part-time work, and choose a safe withdrawal rate (SWR) of 4%, then:

(30,000 – 12,000) ÷ 0.04 = 450,000.
Crossing this line means you can transition to part-time work while your
portfolio covers the gap between your expenses and your reduced income.

How Taxes & Fees Affect Your Barista FIRE Journey

The Tax and Fee Drag slider in a FIRE calculator, set to 1.50 percent per year, allowing users to adjust annual tax and investment fee assumptions for more accurate portfolio growth projections.

The Barista FIRE Calculator also accounts for taxes and fees, offering a realistic view of your compounding rate after drag — typically 0.5–1.5% for low-cost portfolios.

This slider in the assumptions tab reduces your gross return by an annual “drag” to reflect real-world frictions like fund TER/expense ratio, brokerage/platform fees, dividend withholding taxes, and tracking differences. The drag applies across accumulation, the Barista phase, and full FIRE so projections stay realistic.

Example:

If your gross return is 7% and your tax/fee drag is 1.0%, your net return becomes 6.0%.

On 100,000 over 10 years, that’s 196,715 vs. 179,085 — a gap of 17,630 due to fees and taxes.

Even small changes in fees can significantly impact how soon you reach Barista FIRE or Full FIRE.

Tip: Low-cost index portfolios often land around 0.5–1.5% as mentioned above. You can use the higher end if your dividends are taxed heavily or you hold costlier/active funds.

Barista FIRE Example Scenario

Let’s look at a simple example.
Assume your expected annual retirement spending is 30,000. With a SWR of 4% (as mentioned above), you multiply 30,000 × 25 and get your FIRE number of 750,000.
With this amount invested, you could withdraw about 30,000 per year for up to 30 years — with a high probability of never running out of money.

Think the 4% rule is enough? Discover why real FIRE withdrawal rates look very different over 40–60 year retirements.

If you’re pursuing semi-retirement, like we do, here’s what it looks like when following the Barista FIRE strategy:

Before Barista FIRE:
Your portfolio grows through investment returns and monthly savings. This phase focuses on building wealth and reaching your Barista FIRE target.

During Barista FIRE:
Your part-time income covers part of your living expenses, while the rest comes from portfolio withdrawals. This allows your investments to keep compounding, though at a slower pace, as you begin drawing from your portfolio.

After Barista FIRE:
In full retirement, your portfolio eventually covers all living expenses. The calculator projects your portfolio balance based on your chosen withdrawal rate and expected return, helping ensure long-term financial security.

Barista FIRE vs Coast FIRE

Barista FIRE and Coast FIRE both aim to reduce financial pressure, but they work differently. With Barista FIRE, you use part-time income to cover part of your expenses while withdrawing the rest from your portfolio, giving you early partial freedom. With Coast FIRE, you stop making new retirement contributions and let your investments fully compound — meaning you may reduce your work hours since you no longer need to save aggressively for retirement. If you’re unsure which path fits your plan, try our Coast FIRE Calculator to compare both strategies.

FAQs About The Barista FIRE Calculator

Here are the most common questions and simple answers to help you use the calculator effectively.

Is Barista FIRE risky?

Barista FIRE can carry risks, especially if market returns are lower than expected or expenses are underestimated. Because you begin withdrawing from your portfolio earlier, your long-term success depends on careful planning and realistic assumptions.

Does the calculator use real (inflation-adjusted) or nominal returns?

The calculator uses nominal returns by default. However, you can toggle "Show inflation-adjusted (real) values" to see your projected portfolio in today's purchasing power. The inflation rate is configurable separately (default 2%), giving you flexibility to view results either way.

What is sequence of return risk in Barista FIRE?

Sequence of return risk means experiencing poor market returns early in your semi-retirement. Early losses combined with withdrawals can significantly reduce portfolio longevity, even if long-term average returns are strong. See how you can fix it in our related post on What Is a Safe Withdrawal Rate in Retirement? 4% Rule by Age.

What is a Barista FIRE number?

Your Barista FIRE number is the portfolio size at which your investment income — combined with your part-time earnings — fully covers your living expenses. It is smaller than your full FIRE number because part-time income reduces how much your portfolio needs to provide. Use the calculator above to find your personal Barista FIRE number based on your expenses, part-time income, and expected return.

How do healthcare costs affect Barista FIRE?

Healthcare is often one of the biggest uncertainties in early or semi-retirement. If employer benefits are reduced or unavailable, private insurance and unexpected medical expenses can increase your required withdrawal rate.

What happens if I underestimate my expenses?

Underestimating living expenses can lead to higher withdrawal rates than planned, reducing portfolio growth and increasing the risk of running out of money later in life. Alternatively, you may need to work more hours or delay full financial independence to stay on track.

What is the difference between Barista FIRE and Coast FIRE?

Both are semi-retirement strategies, but they work differently. With Barista FIRE, you stop full-time work and cover remaining expenses with part-time income while your portfolio grows. With Coast FIRE, you've already saved enough that your portfolio will compound to your full FIRE number without any further contributions — you don't need to withdraw anything. Barista FIRE requires an earlier, smaller portfolio; Coast FIRE requires you to have already hit a specific savings milestone.
